Château de Caen
The Château de Caen is one of France’s greatest surviving castles, and also one of the largest in Europe. Just an hour and a half from Connelles, this magnificent fortress was built in 1060 by William the Conqueror, and, across the centuries, became a key point of defence against English invasions. Although its keep was destroyed during the French Revolution, it was used as a barracks during the Second World War, before being reclaimed as a historic monument. Today, visitors can explore the Château’s massive ramparts, or browse its on-site museums – the Musée de Normandie and the Musée des Beaux Arts.
