Known as ‘the Castle of the Floating Isle’, Sunpu Castle was originally built by shōgun Tokugawa Ieyasu in the 1600s. Although it was destroyed, the original site was preserved as a park, before a replica of the castle was constructed during the early nineties. Now, visitors can explore both the higashi gomon (eastern gate) and tatsumi yagura (three-storey keep), both of which are surrounded by a broad moat. It’s surrounded by Momijiyama Garden, a traditionally-styled park designed to imitate the castle’s daimyo garden. If you’re looking for a day trip that pairs a dose of history with beautiful scenery, Sunpu Castle is a great choice.
